At A to Zinnias, we have a true passion for all things floral
Our Team
Heidi Knight
Owner
My name is Heidi Knight and I am the owner of A to Zinnias. I have been a 'florist' since the young age of 3. Okay, so maybe that's an exaggeration. Here is the actual story: my grandmother was a florist in Moline, Illinois and during our visits there she would let my sister and I root through the flower trash and make "arrangements" for our mom. I am not sure how pretty they turned out to be, but our mother loved them, nonetheless. I won my first floral design contest at the age of 5 by cutting some of my mother's rose bushes. She was less pleased with this arrangement, but I think my first place winning softened the blow!
I guess you can say that being a florist was in my blood. Fast forward to college, I attend North Carolina State University for my undergrad degree in Political Science. While in school, I worked part time at a Harris Teeter grocery store in the floral department. This is where I received a real foundation of floral basics such as the visual triangle rules and how-to green containers. I have since learned how to artfully break those rules, but you have to learn the basics before you know how to overlook them!
Eventually I found myself in Savannah, GA attending graduate school at Savannah College of Art and Design. While attending SCAD I was in the sweet-spot age when all my friends were getting married and being a poor college student, wedding gifts were not exactly in my budget. So, as a wedding gift, I would agree to make the flowers for their weddings and gradually I was being referred to friends of friends of friends.
That is when A to Zinnias was born and I could not be more excited to continue my floral journey creating beautiful floral arrangements for clients near and far!
Kat Howell
Account Manager & Lead Designer
Kat joined A to Zinnias right around the COVID era. She has an event background as the events manager at The Ballroom on Bull as well as coordinating events with her own company, Moxie Events. She was always interested in the flower component to her events as that’s what she felt gave them all their unique character. She approached Heidi about learning more about flowers and flower arranging. Turns out, she was a natural! She is now an integral part of the entire A to Zinnias operation. She’s our shop manager, lead designer and account manager. When she’s not at work she spends her time with her partner Travis and her 3 dogs, Shep-weenie, Oliver and her newest foster-turned-forever dog, Lexi.
Renee Baldwin Lukin
Lead Designer
Renee is one of A to Zinnias’ longest tenured employees; she’s been with A to Zinnias for nearly 16 years as a lead designer. Her degree in Visual Arts, majoring in Interior Design and minoring in Historic Preservation from Florida State University gives her an instinctive grasp of form and color. When you look at the centerpieces on your guest tables and the boutonnieres on your lapels, know that they’ve been created by a true artist! Renee provides stunning interior design services with her company Baldwin Interiors. When not flowering or designing, Renee spends her time with her son, Drew and her dogs BeBe and Riley.
Shana Axemaker
Designer
Shana and Heidi first met in the early 2000s when A to Zinnias provided the flowers for her own wedding. They realized shortly after that they worked just a few feet from each other at a major aerospace company. Later they both left their corporate careers to follow their true passions – flowers. Shana splits her time between growing her local flower farm (bittersweetflowerfarm.com) and designing beautiful arrangements at A to Zinnias (who is one of Bittersweet’s biggest fans). Perhaps her passion for flowers stems from her upbringing in Alaska – where summers with their nearly 24 hours of daylight, spawn beautiful flora all over. When Shana is not working, she’s with her beloved dog Silas and her partner Josue.
Brad Knight
Logistics / Set-up
Brad has worked at A to Zinnias for 5 years now helping our team get to where we’re going safely and efficiently. He’s our shop’s resident ‘tall guy’ who can reach almost anything without a ladder. He is a proud veteran (disabled) of the US Army having served as a combat engineer in the Persian Gulf War. He later retired from a local aerospace company as a technical writer. A native to Savannah, his large family still lives in the area and enjoys getting together to watch soccer games and go to music concerts. He’s a proud father and grandfather and canine dad to his best girl Lucy!
